“Good month”

Every first of the month in Greece we greet each other with the phrase “Καλό μήνα”. It literally translates to “Good month” but a more appropriate translation would be “May you have a good month”.

So it feels only appropriate that I chose today to express some very good emotions that I have been feeling lately. A life in the arts is challenging; there are a lot of struggles, rejection and self-doubt that comes with it. But when it is rewarding it makes it all worth while.

Today also marks one week exactly since the first, full presentation of Ophelia Rewound at Bathway Theatre. I needed that time to let all those emotions and thoughts settle. And putting aside all my thoughts about the performance and the feedback that I received, the most important thing that I take from that night one week ago, is how grateful I feel for the amazing group of artists and friends that surround me and the community that we have created. Having to fill out forms and write descriptions of the performance, the phrase “solo performance” gets used. But that is not right; there are many signatures, shadows and even ghosts present. My Ophelia would not exist without the help and support of many peers, friends and fellow artists.

And as an artist in this day and age I feel that that is the most important thing that we need to invest on. A strong community that will be there to catch you if you fall, to tell you the truth when you might not want to hear it, to push you to make that difficult, scary step, but who will always be there to support and help you.

So to that community, and everyone else, I want to say “Thank you” and “Καλό μήνα”!
